At one point or another, maybe even still currently, we are told that we have to find a job that we love and is fulfilling. We have to climb some ladder and “become something of ourselves”. We are “supposed to” want promotions and titles.
No one tells us it is okay to work just to earn money to do the things we really want to do.
Societal pressures are absolute bullshit. I don’t know why we are taught all these things about our lives and careers.
In the last year or two that is the stance, I have taken. And then I saw a TikTok (I fucking love TikTok) that said exactly that! That you don’t have to be the best, that you don’t have to love what you do. You can just do what you need to do in order to exist outside of work.
This is not to say that you should force yourself to work in environments that make you feel uncomfortable or that you genuinely dread going to. If you feel any of those things please find a new job – that paycheck is not worth your mental health.
I have spent all of my adult life; almost 20 years doing exactly what I thought I should be doing. As I get closer to 40 I realize I am ready to start living life differently.
There is so much more to life than just working. Life is too short to be solely focused on work. On companies and people who don’t actually give a shit about you. As the saying goes, no one has ever been on their death bed wishing they did better at their job… or something like that.
